There is a building, designed by an architect named William Van Alen, made of brick and steel on the corner of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. It was completed in May of 1930 and was, for about eleven months, the tallest building on Earth. The land under the building was endowed to a private architecture, art, and engineering college in lower Manhattan that, since its founding in and until 2014, provided free tuition to all of its students.
